A Soon to be Dark and Stormy Evening

A Soon to be Dark and Stormy Evening
Fuji X-E1, f/11, 1/42 sec., ISO-400, 18mm, HDR (July 15, 2013)

This is one of my favorite photographs from this past summer. It’s part of downtown Lowell, Michigan, with the feed mill in the background. I was in Lowell for a meeting of the Fallasburg Historical Society. Fallasburg was the important village in the region before the Civil War. But the railroad went through Lowell instead of Fallasburg, and Fallasburg slowed decline in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The storm was coming in, but had not yet arrived, when I took the picture. The mirror viewpoint in the water shows the growing storm in the sky, which itself is only partly visible. To get the tonal range in the image, I bracketed three shots and used HDR processing.
