Old Factory

Almost a decade ago I did a few photos of an old factory near downtown Grand Rapids. An old furniture factory from GR’s “furniture city” days a century-plus ago. Last week I went back. In 2014, the factory simply looked dormant. I think that since then it may have been renovated a little and used as a warehouse, but I’m not sure. Now it looked to be undergoing more serios renovation.

I’m not sure what it’s going to become. It seems unlikely to be more office space, which is what a lot of the old furniture factories near downtown have become in recent years. There is too much office space already in the city, post-COVID. Perhaps condos. There’s not enough rental or for-purchase homes in the area.

It’s a big facility. But all those windows might work well for condos. The parking area–where the trucks and other equipment are–does not seem large enough. Perhaps part of the grown level of the building would be covered parking. Who knows really. Here are a couple more images, the last being the cover image of the blog post (and the only one in color).

Enjoy!
