Library Reno

As part of my job as curator of the Heritage Hall archives at Calvin University, I am spending a bit of time documenting the renovations being done to the first three floors of the library building. The images in this blog post are from the third floor, which will be the new main floor of the library. The second floor will continue to host the archives, but mostly have various student services and student organization offices. The first floor with again house the IT department, have some workspace for students, and have compact shelving for library periodicals.

The third floor has been walled-off, with only a temporary hallway open so people can access a stairwell and elevator to get up to the fourth and fifth floors, which remain open, and the second floor, which its walled off but for hallway to the archives. What you see in the images below is a temporary hallway access into the third floor of the library which only construction personnel can use. And the occasional archivist, wearing a hardhat and bright yellow safety vest. [Click on the images to see larger versions.]

The demolition process is mostly done on the third floor, with walls mostly removed, duct work gone, carpeting gone, etc. It looks forlorn, especially with the lights gone, except for temporary construction lighting, and a few stray items, such as the chair left by the north facing windows.
