I had a busy Saturday, so I did not get to spend a lot of time photographing. But, while running some errands, I swung by Lowell, Michigan, and spent some time photographing in the business district. I’ve photographed there several times before, so I wanted to find something new. The paired photos below are two new things. The first image is a hallway in Hiemenga Hall, a classroom building at Calvin University. [As always, click on the images to see larger versions.]
The hallway is a signature piece in Hiemenga, a main corridor for general traffic, including tours of potential students. So, they did it up nice. I took this image at about 6:30 in the morning, when arriving early to prep for an 8am class. I gave it a negative/infrared look. The geometry of the hallway is what struck me, so I removed the color, which seemed a distraction.
In my walk along the main drag in downtown Lowell, I noticed the signs on the buildings and then noticed the way the buildings in the first pair “step up.” One is a tight frame, cutting off large parts of the buildings on each end, the second shows more of the buildings. It’s less the signs and more the strong vertical lines that make this image for me.
The sign below seemed to call for an image of it, rather than a one of the building with the sign merely an element in the photo. I like the forcefulness of the BW version, but also found the colors compelling, so I’ve included both.
Enjoy!
