Library Mood II

Here are a few more images from the Hekman Library, where I do most of my work. The library is mostly empty of students and other users at the moment. Things will start to come back to life soon, as students and faculty return this week and classes start next week, on Monday the 28th. So, the images are still, by design, moody.

The first two images are “from” images, where the books are being emptied from–the third floor of the library. Just over 100,000 books (mostly history and social sciences) are going from the third floor to the fifth.

The next two are “to” images of the fifth floor, where the books are going. Library staff and the movers have added empty shelves on the fifth floor and are steadily filling them.

And, finally, an empty office on the third floor. Soon it will be under demolition. The office behind the glass has in recent years been part of the cataloging area. In the renovated library, in a year, it will be the new circulation area (including inter-library loan and MelCat).

In a week or so, you will not be able to see this office, as it will be hidden behind a temporary wall. The third floor will be inaccessible, except for short pathways to a stairwell and to an elevator, which will allow people to get to the fourth and fifth floors.

People also will be able to get to the Heritage Hall Archives on the second floor, with a pathway from the stairwell and elevator to the entrance of the library. (In case you’re worried about us archives staff, we’ll also have a pathway to the second-floor bathrooms!).
