My previous post about the vacation my wife and I took in Colorado was landscapes. Here are a few intense monochrome images–moody but not necessarily negative mood.
From Como, a not-quite-a-ghost-town town 20 minutes east of Fairplay. A hotel that went out of business a few years ago. I am not sure if it’s being used or lived in, but it looks pretty derelict. The storm coming in made the mood. And my wife, riding the Great Divide route on a gravel bike, got caught in high winds and hail just south of Como.
And a bit more closeup.
From Kremmling, earlier on the trip, a church and local social organization building, lit up with light.
And, finally, from Salida, where our trip wound up, a back alley. It’s a lovely little town. I could imagine living there. But it’s old enough to have classic back alleys.

People think of the West, it’s usually nature that comes to mind. But it’s also the case the region was ahead of much of the country in urbanizing, already in the mid to late nineteenth century. Mining towns, cattle towns, big cities like L.A. and San Francisco. My next post will be images from some of the towns and cities we traveled through.
